Directeur van New York Rotary Club haalt uit naar Sinclair Lewis

‘The Rotarians struck back yesterday at Sinclair Lewis, author of Babbitt’, schrijft The New York Times. De directeur van de New Yorkse Rotary Club, Charles E. Keck gaf te kennen dat hij stappen ging ondernemen tegen Lewis, die volgens hem misbruik had gemaakt van een ‘popular misunderstanding’ over de Rotary. Hij schetst een beeld van de Rotary als ‘a bunch of great, big, bumptious small-town boosters’.
‘Of course there is in every Rotary Club a spirit of good fellowship and a livery interest in any proposition that is for the common good. But that is distinctly not the basis of the Rotary. The basis is the need of something to bring business men in a big city together in a way that no other organization can, to enable them to work for the good of the community.’
Overigens waren overige Rotary members niet beledigd door Lewis, aldus Keck. Ze lachten hem uit. ‘Lewis is just a little bit off his trolley.’
